Pedare Christian College

In this thoughtfully executed educational space transformation, the integration of modern design principles with practical functionality creates an environment that serves both students and staff while maintaining the institution’s architectural character. The project’s cornerstone is its innovative use of transitional spaces that bridge indoor and outdoor learning environments.

The interior spaces demonstrate sophisticated material selection and spatial planning. The study area’s exposed concrete ceiling maintains industrial authenticity while housing essential mechanical systems, with strategic placement of cylindrical LED down lights providing balanced illumination. The architects employed oriented strand board (OSB) wall cladding, an unexpected yet practical choice that adds warmth and texture while offering durability in high-traffic areas. The orange banquette seating, complete with integrated power points, creates intimate study zones within the larger space, while blue lockers provide necessary storage while contributing to the colour scheme.

The minimalist material palette balances matte black cabinetry with white grid-pattern tiling and blonde timber accents, creating a sophisticated yet functional staff environment.
The exterior facade showcases a series of carefully engineered tension membrane structures, their crisp white peaks creating a rhythmic progression along the building’s length. These architectural elements serve dual purposes – providing essential shade while introducing a contemporary aesthetic that complements the existing structure. The hardwood decking beneath, crafted from durable timber, creates a welcoming threshold that manages the grade change between the building and the adjacent oval through a series of well-proportioned steps and accessible ramps with powder-coated aluminium handrails.

Through careful consideration of flow, functionality, and atmosphere, this renovation successfully addresses the complex demands of modern educational environments while fostering community within the space.
