Blackfriars Library

The transformation of this educational facility masterfully integrates indoor and outdoor learning environments, creating a contemporary library and well-being hub that prioritises student engagement and flexibility.
The project’s success lies in its careful balance of functional design elements with nature-inspired aesthetic touches, demonstrating a deep understanding of how physical spaces can enhance educational experiences.

The interior design showcases sophisticated architectural joinery, with maple-toned wood panels creating a sense of warmth and continuity throughout the space. A stand out feature is the illuminated sculptural tree installation, which serves as both a focal point and space divider. This custom element incorporates LED strips within its branching structure, casting a gentle glow against the sage green accent wall while creating an organic transition between ceiling and wall planes.
The perforated acoustic ceiling treatment, running in linear patterns, effectively manages sound while maintaining visual interest through its precise geometric arrangement.

The outdoor learning area exemplifies thoughtful integration with the building’s architecture through its hardwood decking system.
The materiality of the space reflects a considered approach to durability and maintenance without sacrificing aesthetic appeal. The flooring solution employs a clever combination of commercial-grade carpet tiles in grey tones for high-traffic areas, transitioning to sections of green carpet that echo the natural elements of the design. These are complemented by polished concrete elements that add textural variety while ensuring longevity.
The custom joinery includes built-in seating nooks and display shelving, maximising the utility of wall spaces while maintaining an open, uncluttered environment.

The success of this renovation lies not just in its aesthetic appeal, but in its careful consideration of the end-users’ needs.
